Moana Creek $285,000
(Ref # 1162)
A Bach in the Bush, up an Estuary, on an Island - The ultimate less is more.
Pat and Jim built this place a few years ago as a simple sustainable retreat on an island they have loved for a long time.
Simple in that the two buildings are compact, low maintenance, and blend into the surrounding bush.
Sustainable in that solar panels and battery provide power for lights and radio, water is collected from their roof and cooking hot water and heating are all gas fuelled.
Located on the shores of Moana Creek in North Cove, this property can be reached by water only using either your own boat or water taxi or ferry services from Sandspit.
If arriving on the water taxi or Ferry, you will alight on the shared all-tide pontoon then make your way by dinghy to the property. If you come over in your own runabout, you can get right up to the property two hours either side of high tide.
This bush block is 3845 square metres in size and has riparian rights. (Your front boundary is mean high tide mark)
It is 30 metres wide and runs from the shore at the bottom, to the ridge of the hill at the rear.
Covered with mature and regenerating native bush, it is a haven for bird life including: Tui, Weka, Fantail, Morepork and many others. On the estuary itself you will see: Oyster Catchers, Shags, King Fishers, Grey Herons, Terns, Gulls, Paradise Ducks and many more.
The Bach comprises two buildings. The main building has an open plan kitchen, dining living area opening out on to a sunny deck with views out over the cove. Also in this building is a bathroom with shower, toilet etc.
The smaller building is the sleeping area with one double bed and a set of single bunks.
As previously mentioned, power for lights, radio TV etc comes from a 12 volt battery charged up by a large solar panel on the roof.
A gas califont provides hot water and the stove is gas powered.
The main water supply is a 3000 gal tank above the house which is supplied from the roof.
All furnishings and appliances are included in the sale as is the ingenious motorised trolley used to transport bags etc up to the building.
This is the most affordable bach on Kawau Island and, I suspect, anywhere within 100 km of Auckland.
It is simple, easy to maintain, cheap to own and is the perfect antidote to the pressures of modern city living.
Treat yourselves and, your children to an experience that will be with you forever.
