About Kawau Island...
A gallery and short introduction to this most beautiful island...
Kawau is a sub-tropical Island of approximately 5,000 acres, off the coast of northern New Zealand in the peaceful South Pacific. It's conveniently located just 45 kilometers north of Auckland City.
First settled by Europeans in 1838, the Island was mined for Copper and Manganese for a number of years. It was purchased by the Governor of New Zealand, (Sir George Grey) in 1862, who made it his home until 1888.
Grey's builders created what is now known as the Mansion House and his team of gardeners created the exotic gardens and plantations, which still exist today.
The Island has remained largely in private ownership apart from small areas now in historic Reserve.
Access to the Island is by boat or helicopter, with regular Ferry services operating from Sandspit on the mainland. Electricity, phone and all modern communications services are available and mail and other items are delivered as required.
Kawau combines the seclusion of an Island with the convenience of most mainland services, all within a short distance of Auckland City. It's superb scenery and un-polluted waters provide a paradise for fishing and sailing . The clear night sky enables you to see stars forever and the absence of traffic lets you hear the many native and exotic birds that inhabit the Island.
There are few places in this world where you can own a part of an Island like Kawau.
If you think that you would like to enjoy that pleasure, then I'd be delighted to help you to do so. ... John
